AGLAIA LIOUZA – A RECIPE FOR CONFLICT [sample of students’ work]

A recipe is a protocol that gives structure and instructions to how to process a list of ingredients. However, it is open to interpretation – and even deviancy – by adding ingredients, altering quantities, adjusting procedures, and modifying length of cooking processes. Aglaia envisions the making of a recipe as a practice to experience restorative-based ways of working and relate to each other, both within the group of people inhabiting her farm and as a way to relate to the neighborhood community. In her project, the collective creation of a recipe implies no hierarchical labour relations among the residents of the farm but it entails testing, attempts, failure, and continuous negotiations.

Aglaia’s project proposes to occupy a large greenhouse and the adjacent barns with a community of people that cultivate agricultural products according to permaculture principles. The products are distributed directly to consumers in pre-packed boxes that also include a weekly recipe. Hence, her project includes space for housing and areas for cultivation along with a large communal kitchen, a storage/packaging facility, and a centre for restorative justice. The farm is composed of a few volumes, which intersect each other and the existing greenhouse, where vegetables are cultivated but also other convivial and working function are carried on seasonally. The result is a use of space that is adaptable, transformative, and seasonal.
