Expo EU Mies Award 2019 + Opening debate 23/01

The traveling exhibition of the EU Mies Award 2019 is a showcase of the best designs of European architects. The Award is the most famous architecture prize in Europe. Every two years the European Commission and Fundació Mies van der Rohe pay tribute to remarkable projects of contemporary architecture which contribute to the character of Europe. The biennial prize is seen as a gauge for the current European architectural scene and leads to important debates on design and building in Europe.  An international top jury, chaired by Dorte Mandrup, selected 6 Belgian designs for the shortlist for this edition.

The exhibition in Leuven shows all 40 projects with images, models, videos, plans and drawings. This year a place of honor goes to:

• the winner: the transformation of 350 homes, Grand Parc, Bordeaux (Lacaton & Vassal architects, Frédéric Druot Architecture, Christophe Hutin Architecture, EU Mies Award

• the winner of the Emerging Architect Prize: E26 school refectory in Montbrun-Bocage (BAST studio)

The 4 other finalists:

• Terrassenhaus Lobe Block in Berlin (Brandlhuber + Emde, Burlon / Muck Petzet Architects)

• Auditorium and Congress Center of Plasencia (Selgas Cano)

• Psychiatric Center Caritas in Melle (architects de vylder vinck taillieu)

• Skanderbeg Square, Tirana (51N4E, Plant en Houtgoed, Anri Sala and iRI)

OPENING DEBATE

Following two Belgian healthcare projects in the shortlist of this edition, architect Jo Taillieu of finalist project PC Caritas in Melle and Ann Heylighen, research professor at KU Leuven, will discuss healthcare architecture: how can design choices contribute to a better healthcare environment?

Moderator: Robert-Jan de Kort, architect-partner of De Kort Van Schaik from Rotterdam and former jury member of the Hedy D’Ancona prize for care architecture
