Buildings can’t stand silent days Unlocking spatial potential through drawn illustrations

Buildings can’t stand silent days
Unlocking spatial potential through drawn illustrations, by Andrea Hofer

The approach to the vacant social housing at Witte Kaproenenplein 1-15, is not based on existing plans as usual. The existing structure is analysed and understood through observations, photographs and illustrations to unlock the existing qualities of the building. The illustrations will create findings and reveal possible new qualities. Through the interventions, the existing structure should be celebrated
and the building revitalised as a new third place. The work is also intended to take a critical look at the treatment of post-war buildings, especially their vacancy. The proposals for the building and the new interventions are guided by the following ambition.

„Buildings depend on being used – if they are empty, they are useless. Transforming the building to a place that adds value to the neighbourhood by using the advantages of the size, location and surroundings of the building”
