Sarah Wigglesworth Architects is interested in the everyday worlds that form the backdrop to daily life. These spaces are not the ‘gold standard’ projects that tend to receive most attention, and they are often women’s spaces. They are often the forgotten spaces such as public realm, schools, community buildings and housing; they are often poorly funded (in the UK) and places where design is not considered important. SWA believes they deserve as much attention are more high-profile work and we strive to dignify them. Sarah’s presentation will discuss three projects at three scales, using these (and others) to discuss the work of her practice. These will illustrate our approach to the design of the everyday.
Sarah Wigglesworth, Director MA Dip Arch RIBA RDI MBE
Sarah is director of her London-based architectural practice which she founded in 1994. Her work is acknowledged as a pioneering influence in British Architecture, and specialises in exploring the built environment’s role in addressing the ecological crisis. Winning many awards for its work, her practice has designed buildings for the educational, community, urban design, cultural and housing sectors.
The practice builds its work on careful research, including working with users, and original conceptual thinking. For 20 years, until 2016, Sarah was Professor of Architecture at the University of Sheffield. Latterly she led DWELL, an interdisciplinary research project designing environments suited to older people. She has authored two books and many articles. She was granted the title Royal Designer for Industry in 2012 and was awarded an MBE in 2003.
