De tentoonstelling HAMMAM. STEAMING STORIES gunt je een zeldzame blik door het sleutelgat van de hammamcultuur en de culturele evolutie van badgewoontes in Molenbeek, Marokko en België. In Marokko is de hammam al eeuwenlang een begrip. Mannen en vrouwen komen er niet alleen om te ontspannen, maar ook om elkaar te ontmoeten, geheimen te delen en rituelen uit te voeren. Hammam. Steaming Stories onderzoekt de relatie tussen twee fenomenen: de wereldwijde doorbraak van hammam enerzijds en de teloorgang van de authentieke hammam anderzijds. Wat maakt de hammam zo universeel én zo uniek? Hoe springen Vlaamse badhuizen om met Marokkaanse tradities en welk effect heeft de wereldwijde hammam-hype op de badhuizen in Marokko, Libanon, Syrië,… én in Brussel. Neem een duik in de stomende verhalen, snuif de heerlijke geuren van de bijzondere producten, en verwonder je over de levendige tradities.

In Morocco, the hammam has been a household name for centuries. Men and women come not only to relax, but also to meet, share secrets and perform rituals. Hammam. Steaming Stories investigates the relationship between two phenomena: the worldwide breakthrough of hammam on the one hand and the loss of the authentic hammam on the other. What makes the hammam so universal and so unique? How do Flemish bathhouses deal with Moroccan traditions and what effect does the global hammam hype have on bathhouses in Morocco, Lebanon, Syria, … and in Brussels.
