Space Oddities: An archipelago of 10 heterotopic enclaves in relation with micro-cultures in an unknown city of Bangkok by Dalia Puodziute

Space Oddities explores ten heterotopic cemetery sites across four cultures and zoning typologies within Bangkok’s rapidly evolving urban fabric. By analyzing environmental issues, urban conditions, and participant experience, the project identifies micro-cultures as catalysts for transformation. These sites—once abandoned and disconnected—are reimagined as urban laboratories that contribute much-needed public space in a sprawling metropolis. Focusing on four representative cemeteries, the project traces Bangkok’s shift from aquatic traditions to vertical urbanism, emphasizing the value of indigenous knowledge in shaping sustainable, culturally resonant public spaces. The choice of drawing techniques and spatial perspectives plays a critical role, offering the most nuanced and revealing means of representing these complex microcosms and their layered entanglements. Ultimately, Space Oddities proposes a network of microcosms that mediate between histories, cultures, and urban futures in one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing cities.
