Niké Vanhoutte ‘Shadow of occlusions’

What first peaked my interest from the fragments that were shown in class were these 2 unrelated elements that played of the same idea. One was a sound that my mind interpreted and the other was an intriguing image. The sound intrigued me because my mind was an active participant in the experience, not knowing what sound it was giving it its own explanation. The image really spoke to me because it pulls you in, you want to know what is happening around the corner in this image, the camera movement pulling away drawing you in.
For my one minute film I wanted to play of of the idea to play with the viewers mind. I wanted to make the viewer aware of the empty space in an image and specifically how much power is in what isn’t actually there. The ‘emptiness’ in an image, creates space that allows the mind to fill in the blanks.
Drawn to what happens in the shadows I wanted to make a hybrid architecture that arises from the shadows, creating plans with shadows to make a new type of architecture that on it’s own also interacts with the shadows. I call my project Shadow of Occlusion because an occlusion shadow is the darkest part of the shadow and also the part where the object connects with the shadow. By connecting the shadows I created a hybrid object.
