Marta Wisniewska ‘Space of Metamorphosis’

Many times we are struck by objects and spaces whose scars set us to thinking of what they once were. In Franz Kafka’s book “Metamorphosis” a salesman called Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning and finds himself transformed into a huge insect. He has to face the new conditions and all of the struggles that come with this unexpected change. The process of transformation of his body remains mysterious. We are able to visualize only the primal human form and the after-transformation insect. The cocoon – a place where whole process of change takes part in is not just a cover that secures the object from outside but the environment on its own.
By investigating the slow process of change step by step translating it into drawings we can notice the fluctuating character of space developed over time, its imperfection and incompleteness. Following rigorously metamorphosis we finally see the beauty of transformation, the passage of time and traces that are making it unrepeatable and unique. The hybrid space of metamorphosis consists of all stages merged together. It requires sensitive and penetrating glance from the observers to recognize parts of them. Half-erased, half-invaded territory tells the story of evolution without hiding any defects. By not giving a clear answer about what actually happened there it leaves room for imagination to interprete and recreate it our own way.
