Aurore Hazée ‘My Landscape’

My perception is not a frozen image of a moment in time – it is a composition of all the layers of my memory. It is made up of blurs, out-of-focus, different densities, foregrounds… The elements in this graphic representation reveal the different layers I have gone through. Physically and mentally. My expectations, my apprehensions, my desires, my disappointments, my fears and my joys do not disappear when the next one arrives. They overlap and create depth. The process by which an organism collects, interprets, and understands information from the outside world alters our perceptions of space. Perception is indeed composed of fragments of life, memories, references, … What I see is therefore intrinsic to who I am, it exists only in me.
This particular way of describing how perception works was demonstrated by an expedition to a lighthouse, an object of fantasy that, by itself, has awakened hundreds of myths, tales, and dreams. Indeed, these buildings are known to all but exist in a thousand ways in the collective imagination of those who think. How does it exist for me?
By taking a trip to the end of the world, literally, it was possible to bring out the elements that influence my world view. Or at least, to pick them out of my memory and allow them to surface and express themselves freely. They have taken many forms and have finally been put down on paper, drawn in pencil.
