Weronika Gajda ‘Tower of Time’

The project explores imagined landscape and emerging from it – architecture of a tower. Tower which is a result of a desire to a moment of catch and search for a context of boundless nature. In this place it becomes difficult to define human scale and recognise the remains of architecture. Its speculation brought me to the site near a dam. This place emanates in duality. On one hand brings the landscape, new living areas on the edge of a dam and the connection between two different lands… but on the other hand it is a separation, strong boundary, end of continuity. This contradiction explains the strong relation of a tower with time and it occurs in the process of architecture formation. This is a place which seems to be waiting for new visitors to honour them with an unusual experience and at the same time it is a memory of space, a mystified architecture of silence, built there to be left alone, forgotten.

The tower resembles the place where the desired objects are moulded together. Its form is inspired by hanging on cables tubes. This scene came with the conveyors from the movie “Beton” of Jean-Luc Godard. They are heavy, big, rounded. In my speculation first I explore them from the streets of Nice from the movie of Jean Vigo “Apropos de Nice”. I began wondering where they all go? What is their destination? How are they created?

Sometimes the conveyors touch the ground. It feels heavy. First people’s  hands are raised to the sky trying to reach… touch… balance the heaviness of the tubes with a delicate moment of reconnection with the ground. this creates its scenery. The speculation on the objects becomes its own independent reality… its world, new environment, architecture; the architecture of non human scale but undeniably human made.

Here the production starts. Also, a need of understanding turns into a need of inhabiting. This procedure follows the process of drawing.

Careful observations of movement produce fast, intense, thick lines. One following another, growing in a dense structure.
Now they are main actors here:
– traffic of lines: dense, uncontrolled, free movements
– dark patches, shadows bring life to details and mystify structure
– patterns: dozens of them, control the shape, reach the boundaries
– thick line: shows the scale, direction, materiality
– white, plain surface: blurs the structure, but brings connections between two strangers

Collision of these actors evolves in new situations. The exploration of light and shadow creates new spaces. Some of them are represented in a drawing, some just suggested by numerous sketches. The landscape is more defined. Making models explains the details, relation with time, scale and materiality. It all makes the new architecture closer to the spectator. The form of a tower explores the conveyors. Many of them arrived here and many more are coming.
