Patterns of the Unplanned

Selen Sürmeli

Patterns of the Unplanned is a journey resulting out of unplanned situations encountered in the urban fabric. Instead of discarding, it aims to reveal the potentials of perceived disorders which are created by unplanned situations in an architectural matter. By extracting unplanned situations out of the ordinary compositions of the terrain, disorder becomes evident. Evident enough to be perceived by the senses, allowing it to be interpreted by our sense of imagination. Patterns of the Unplanned has the contradiction in its meaning. Patterns can be seen in regularly repeated arrangements. They are built up in a mental construct. They lean on something that we have already encountered. They are predictable and oft en guide us to the continuation of something more. Unplanned, on the other hand, gives a feeling of insecurity due to unpredictability, contrary to the predictable notion of patterns. The unplanned contains surprises and unpredictable variations unfolding in treasures or disasters. The unpredictable in general has an emotional value, and facing with it creates a new relationship between us and the encountered.
