Beate Hølmebakk was born in Oslo in 1963. She studied architecture at the Oslo School of Architecture (AHO) under Sverre Fehn, Wenche Selmer and Christian Norberg-Schulz and as a visiting student at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union under John Hejduk. After graduating from AHO she worked for Raimund Abraham.
Since 2007 Hølmebakk has been a professor at AHO. She has been artistic professor at Chalmers University, Sweden and visiting professor at the University of Navarra, Spain, and Cornell University, USA. She was the 2024/2025 Patrick Geddes Visiting Fellow at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
Since 2004 Hølmebakk has been running the architectural office Manthey Kula together with partner Per Tamsen. The office operates at the intersection of art, architecture and landscape architecture with a production that spans from ideal, explorative projects to public commissions. The work is based not on the study of precedents, but rather on the desire to bring something of distinct character into existence. It is about presence; and about how things are made, as a careful balance of site, material, structure, and narrative.
In 2022 both Hølmebakk and Tamsen received the Swedish Prince Eugene Medal for outstanding artistic achievement. Their work has been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2009, 2011, 2019, and 2022. Publications include an A+U monograph (24:05), two asBUILT books (Pax) and two monographs: MK About (Libria) and Rotunda
IV: Manthey Kula (Trema).
