Robin Vermeulen and Aleksandar Pilyov win the Prijs Jef Van Ranst 2023

Architect Jef Van Ranst had a dream: to get young talents to draw again. The drawing, made by hand, as an expression of a thinking, doing or design process rather than the drawing as an artistic artefact. Every year, the Jef Van Ranst Foundation searches for design drawings that visually challenge, question or express a process, idea or spatial proposal.

The Jef Van Ranst Prize is exclusively for students of all Flemish architectural education institutions. The Prize is awarded to one bachelor’s and one master’s student from one of the participating institutions. Each institution submits works by two Bachelor’s and two Master’s students for the selection. A professional jury selects the freehand design sketches, the process drawing and the drawing as a means of communication within the lines of the design sketches. (chairman of the jury 2023: Dr. Helen Thomas – Drawing Matter)

This year the prize goes to two students from the Faculty of Architecture: congratulations to Robin Vermeulen (bachelor winner) and Aleksandar Pilyov (master winner)!

Students Ijeoma Ruben and Jinte Kockelbergh were also nominated. The faculty also submitted drawings by students Aysegul Agaclitepe, Yentl Jehoul, Xuming Zheng, Anne-Lise Vael, Toon Huyghe, Louise Nys and Frauke Soetewey.

Many thanks to teachers Riet Eeckhout and Robin Schaeverbeke who help select and submit the student work.
