Laurens Bekemans is an architect and co-founder of Brussels-based BC architects & studies—an architectural practice and non-profit research entity and materials laboratory—and most recently, BC materials—an urban mining company that repurposes construction site waste. He is the author, with Pauline Lefebvre, of The Act of Building, and teaches at KU Leuven University and UHasselt.
The act of building is act and discourse. It is the complex effort of a temporary association to create an infrastructure of its own. For this purpose the architects of BC call on actors from different backgrounds and a range of skills, and use different materials and technologies. The act of building has an impact and is at the same time a manifestation of values and ideas, which grew out of a broad network around a specific project. Building has a transformative power, driven by action, narrative and result.
The GOING PUBLIC program of the Faculty of Architecture is a series of lectures, exhibitions and publications organized throughout the year highlighting certain themes and topics that are important within each of the 4+1 Engagements: Urban Cultures, Mediating Tactics, Craftsmanship, Legacy and the Brussels Way.
This lecture is part of the LEGACY engagement that will focus in the academic year 2019-2020: on Sustainable Legacy. Social sustainability, community involvement, appropriation processes will be highlighted over the course of the year.
