Farah Abdallah ‘Eruption to connection ’

The project is primarily a getaway development that the public recognises as a green lung that is accessible by residents of Muide. The site is prolonged in Muide from the east side of the waterfront area that is located on the harbour, to the west side waterfront of the neighbourhood. It is a water to water connection. Site topography allows the opportunity to create unique journey experiences. The site also has no significant development which puts responsibility to initiate a context for future predictions and expectations.

Inspiration from the harbour comes from an on site-place where we did some photographing and film recording. The inspiration video starts with wood particles that are delivered by a truck. They are stored in a big industrial hangar in mountains state. While falling, the particles move the other stable particles. What could serve the interest here is the state of something that should happen. A silence that now speaks. The place receives the materials that are stored in a way that mimics the natural mountains. Each day, the material is placed in a different location and quantity which creates different scenarios. In the video we can see the fog above these man made mountains reaching the ceiling structure which reminds us of the contrast between nature and man built structures. The topographical mountain lines evoque and erupt to form the space from organic lines to structured lines designed to suit the atmosphere.

The project provides a form of inhabitation and access. It has been designed to allow visitors to walk through it, as well as rest on its exposed platforms, observe the city of Ghent through the upper platforms and patios, and enjoying glimpses of the surrounding landscape while engaging with different activities. Some of the basic strategies are to allow access to the water, open up new vistas, and invite visitors to get onto the water to experience the waterfront and encourage the access to the restricted area.

The intervention is approached from the belief that the area shows potential of spatial organisation while preserving the identity and provide liveability to Muide. More specifically, the intervention is conceived as a linking organism which constantly receives people in real time situations.
