Eleni Yapoutzidi Karra and Michael Van Eycken – Noetic Conjunctions

Noetic Conjunctions
Of continuity across time, space, and perception

of continuity across time, space, and perceptionHow can we embrace mystery and uncertainty as opportunities for play, imagination, and exploration? How might design engage with multiple scales of action and meaning in a landscape shaped by decline and memory?
This project approaches these questions through a process of reverse mapping, a tool for uncovering joy, color, and narrative within a site often misunderstood or overlooked. It encourages us to see not only what is present, but also what could emerge, if we engage with the place through open and attentive perception.
Set within the historic yet overlooked Chambon Passage, this project proposes a scenographic intervention, not to create images, but to craft active, perceptual spaces that engage memory, presence, and possibility.
At its core a noetic conjunction: a conscious bridging of time, space, and perception. The design responds to the site’s contrast, a fast-paced, visible surface above a forgotten, silent layer beneath, highlighting the instability of time and presence.
Through playful, participatory design, the intervention reintroduces life, color, and dialogue, inviting new conjunction between people, place, and history. The passage is reimagined not only as a route but as a living archive, a moment in the city’s unfolding narrative.
Lastly, during this mapping process, the symbol of the roof repeatedly surfaced, both literally and metaphorically. In the revised design, this symbol is expressed through material choices that evoke a strong sense of home, offering warmth, shelter, and belonging within the city syntax.
