Het perspectief van Soil Times is fundamenteel ecologisch, maar op een anders-dan-normatieve manier. Via norm-kritisch ontwerp zul je een nieuwe stedelijke typologie ontwikkelen die we tentatief Hybrid [Gardenbuilding] noemen – naar Haraway’s concept van [NatuurCultuur]. We nemen daarbij als site-typologie stedelijke hoeken in Gent. Dergelijke hoeken hebben een display-potentieel waarmee visies op toekomstige stedelijke bewoning uitgedragen kunnen worden.
Het ontwerp van een Hybrid [Gardenbuilding] vereist het herdenken van de grenzen (interieur/exterieur) en van de elementen van architectuur door een radicaal engagement aan te gaan met wicked matters zoals de meer-dan-menselijke materie soil. Initiatieven zoals het Internationale Jaar van de Bodem (Verenigde Naties) onderstrepen de urgentie om vanuit meerdere perspectieven zorg te dragen voor soil. Architecten kunnen niet achterblijven om deze oproep vanuit hun expertise te beantwoorden en hun ontwerpaandacht te richten op het maken van tijd en ruimte voor deze vitale materie.
De onderzoekende ontwerpactiviteit zal resulteren in kritische, architecturale projecties (van een gebouwtypologie, van architecturale elementen, van stedelijke interventies…) die zich ontpoppen tot voorafbeeldingen van een meer ecologische stedelijke toekomst. Concrete ontwerpactiviteiten en theoretische en technische kaders kunnen zich hierin vermengen tot reëel-speculatief-fictionele exploraties. Je maakt gebruik van methoden zoals critical fictions, speculative fabulating, norm-critical designing, en provotyping.
In deze studio word je begeleid door de ontwerp-gebaseerde onderzoekscel Architecture & Wicked Matters. Een selectie van het werk zal getoond worden in de tentoonstelling Grounded Fabulations, in combinatie met soil-gerelateerd werk van andere disciplines.

The perspective of Soil Times is fundamentally ecological, but in an other-than-normative way. By norm-critical design you will search for a novel urban typology tentatively called Hybrid [Gardenbuilding], following Haraway’s concept of [natureculture]. Urban corners in Ghent will serve as the site for exploring. Such corners are endowed with a piloting display-potential, enabling them to radiate visions on future urban habitation.
Designing a Hybrid [Gardenbuilding] will require rethinking architecture’s interior/exterior borders and architectural elements, in order to more radically engage with wicked matters such as the more-than-human matter soil. Initiatives like the International Year of Soils (declared by the United Nations), underpin the urgency of engaging from multiple perspectives with soil. Architects cannot stay behind responding to this call and direct their design attention to making time and space for this vibrant matter.
The investigative design activity will result in critical, architectural projections (of a building typology, of architectural elements, of urban interventions…) foreshadowing a more ecological urban future. Concrete design activity and theoretical and technical frameworks can mix herein into real-speculative-fictional explorations. You will use methods such as critical fictions, speculative fabulating, norm-critical designing, and provotyping.
In this studio you are guided by the design-based research cell Architecture & Wicked Matters. You will be able to exhibit (a selection of) your work in the exhibition Grounded Fabulations, mixed with work on/in soil from other disciplines.
