Katoo Geurts – Converting Contingencies

Converting Contingencies

Contingency is the idea that something only occurs or exists because of specific
circumstances. An object or situation could have been very different if the circumstances were only slightly different. When visiting the BUDA site, two presences coincidentally crossed, —myself, as the discoverer and ten pages of an art magazine from 1962. This intersection of presences started a practice of converting contingencies: a process of translating coincidental and fragile elements, such as damage, loss and absence, by fixing them. This act of conversion is an intuitive and joyful process, whereby the circumstances are allowing to guide further research and experimenting. Gradually, my presence becomes more prominent while eternalizing the ephemeral nature of these delicate contingencies. The archeological intersection started on the 9th of October 2023, but because of the continuous character of this practice, there is no real enddate.
