WAAROM
In zijn laatste boek : Res Nulius beschrijft architect en forestier Wim Cuyvers een nieuwe ‘condition humaine’ die een rechtstreeks gevolg is van onze permanente ‘geconnecteerdheid’.
Smartphones en -watches registreren permanent onze beweging en maken van ons controleurs en gecontroleerden in de ruimte. In Wim’s ogen wijzigde deze ‘enkelband’-situatie de definitie van publieke ruimte en dicteert ze ons ruimtegebruik dermate dat er geen sprake meer kan zijn van architectuur als ‘kunst van de ruimte’.

De nieuwe ‘condition humaine’ verwacht waarschijnlijk een nieuwe architectuur-definitie.
In deze studio gaan we al doende op zoek naar de fundamenten van architectuur en confronteren we deze met de nieuwe uitdagingen.
Met het No-Grid AOB onderzoeken we het principe van ‘architecturale vehikels’ waarbij we de koppeling van architectuur met een vaste plek in vraag stelden. In het verleden keken we met nomadische ogen naar verplaatsbare, demonteerbare constructies die zeer beperkt in tijd een kortstondige relatie aangingen met het landschap, om nadien spoorloos terug te verdwijnen.

HOE
Stap 1: de Japanse houtverbinding
Start van een ruw stuk hout (gekliefd loofhout,min 33cm) en hanteer de klassieke houtbewerkingstechnieken om aan de twee uiteinden een elegante verbinding te verkrijgen waarmee je kan koppelen aan het stuk van je klasgenoot. Zo bouwen we een ruw-houten netwerk (grid) dat ons via deze klassieke ‘craft’ verbindt.

Stap 2: super-hero
Bedenk een alter ego (held of anti-held) die de architectuurwaarden verdedigt die je belangrijk acht.
Deze ‘actionfigure’ combineert ergonomisch menselijke kenmerken met bovennatuurlijke, augmented of digitized capaciteiten.
De figuur is typerend voor het nieuwe architectuurbeeld en kan de eigenschappen van deze nieuwe ‘geconnecteerde’ ruimtelijkheid maximaal benutten.
De figuur presenteer je als schaalmodel (1/5 of 1/10) of via een stripverhaal. Bij de figuur hoort een kaart van het landschap waarin het beweegt…

Stap 3: high tech bushcraft
Bedenk een tijdelijk, afbreekbaar/verplaatsbaar verblijf voor deze figuur in de context van een zelf gekozen landschap, (zie kaart).

WHY
In his latest book, Res Nulius, architect and forester Wim Cuyvers describes a new “human condition” that is a direct consequence of our permanent “connectivity.”
Smartphones and watches constantly record our movements, turning us into controllers and subjects of control in space. In Wim’s view, this “ankle bracelet” situation has changed the definition of public space and dictates our use of space to such an extent that architecture can no longer be considered “the art of space.”
The new “human condition” likely demands a new definition of architecture.
In this studio, we will explore the foundations of architecture and confront them with new challenges.

With the No-Grid AOB, we investigate the principle of “architectural vehicles,” questioning the connection between architecture and a fixed location. In the past, we looked nomadically at movable, demountable structures that entered into a fleeting relationship with the landscape for a very limited time, only to disappear without a trace.

HOW
Step 1: The Japanese Wood Joint
Start with a rough piece of wood (split hardwood, at least 33 cm) and use classic woodworking techniques to create an elegant joint at both ends, allowing you to connect to your classmate’s piece. In this way, we build a rough wooden network (grid) that connects us through this classic craft.

Step 2: Superhero
Conceive an alter ego (hero or anti-hero) who defends the architectural values you consider important.
This “action figure” combines ergonomic human features with supernatural, augmented, or digitized capabilities.
The figure is typical of the new architectural image and can maximize the properties of this new “connected” spatiality.
Present the figure as a scale model (1/5 or 1/10) or as a comic strip. The figure comes with a map of the landscape in which it moves…

Design a temporary, demountable/movable habitat for this figure within the context of a chosen landscape (see map).
