Eisenschmidt recently completed two panorama drawings (“The City of Urban Facts” and “The City of Urban Fictions”) in an effort to detect and describe new forms of architectural urbanism. His lecture unearths urban inventions from around the world that are highly productive but largely unknown and revisits visionary proposals by architects across the globe that are influential but remain predominantly unbuilt. These two directives seek to articulate an architectural urbanism that simultaneously taps the inventiveness of architecture and the ingenuities of the city.
Alexander Eisenschmidt is an architect, theorist, and occasional curator. He teaches at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s School of Architecture and directs the Visionary Cities Project. He is the guest-editor of City Catalyst (2012), the lead-editor of Chicagoisms (2013), and the curator and designer of City Works at the 13th Venice Biennale in 2012 and of Collective City at the Shenzhen Biennale on Urbanism in 2015. His work is currently on view at the 2016 Architecture Triennale in Lisbon.
