Erfgoed versus erfenis: over culturele en architecturale geletterdheid
A // Culturele geletterdheid
‘In tijden waarin we verdrinken in informatie, snakken we naar kennis’ schrijft Richard Ovenden in Burning the book en ook hoe ‘Bibliotheken en archieven van cruciaal belang zijn geworden voor de ondersteuning van de democratie, de rechtstaat en de open samenlevingen omdat het instellingen zijn die ‘vasthouden aan de waarheid’’.
B // Visie
De stad Antwerpen wil tegen 2035 antwoorden bieden op maatschappelijke tendensen zoals de dalende geletterdheid en de snelgroeiende digitalisering.
Om dit mogelijk te maken is er nood aan een duurzaam en toekomstbestendig investeringsplan en een wendbare en efficiënte organisatiestructuur voor instellingen die hier nu al volop op inzetten: de openbare bibliotheken, de Erfgoedbibliotheek en het Letterenhuis.
Het netwerk van bibliotheken zet voornamelijk in op leesplezier, leesbevordering, digitale vaardigheden en culturele
ontmoeting. De archief- en erfgoedinstellingen focussen eerder op culturele geletterdheid.
De Erfoedbibliotheek Hendrik Conscience en het Letterenhuis verzamelen, bewaren en ontsluiten literair en bibliothecair erfgoed. Ze nemen zowel vanuit hun unieke collecties als vanuit en i.s.m. hun doelgroepen een verbindende en inspirerende rol op in het erfgoed- en kunstenveld en dit zowel op stedelijk als op Vlaams niveau.
In die zin kan een meer geïntegreerde samenwerking op een gedeelde site een verrijking betekenen voor zowel de
eindgebruiker als voor de collectie als voor het erfgoed- en kunstenveld in Antwerpen en Vlaanderen. Door het bevorderen en bevragen van historische kennis en begrip, verschaffen beide instellingen immers inzicht in het creatieve proces en de (boek)geschiedenis, en helpen zij het geheugen en de literaire-, en boekcultuur te behouden, te promoten en te actualiseren. Zaken van maatschappelijk en democratisch belang die inspirerend werken en zorgen voor verbinding in een voortdurend veranderende wereld.
EHC is de belangrijkste bewaarbibliotheek van Vlaanderen met een toonaangevende collectie op het gebied van de
geesteswetenschappen in het algemeen en het culturele erfgoed in Vlaanderen in het bijzonder. Het Letterenhuis heeft de grootste, breedste, meest coherente, unieke en daardoor belangrijkste collectie van literair- (cultureel) (archief)erfgoed in Vlaanderen van ca. 1800 tot heden.
Gecombineerd geeft deze collectie een beeld van de wording, samenhang en context van de letteren en het cultuurleven in Vlaanderen.
C // Opgave in de Masters
Het Hendrik Consciënceplein in Antwerpen is een verborgen juweel in de binnenstad van Antwerpen, gevormd en omzoomd door gebouwen met een rijke geschiedenis. Twee kanten van het plein worden ingenomen door een groot gebouwencomplex waarin vandaag de Erfgoedbibliotheek is gehuisvest. De bibliotheek heeft een rijke collectie van boeken van verschillende genres die ter plaatse kunnen worden ingezien maar niet kunnen worden uitgeleend. Verschillende leeszalen met studieplekken vormen dan ook de kern van het complex. De grootste, fraaiste en meest beroemde leeszaal is de historische Nottebohmzaal. Daarnaast zijn er enkele kleinere leeszalen gebouwd in de 20e eeuw, enkele kantoren en werkruimte voor medewerkers en vooral boekenmagazijnen voor een continu groeiende collectie.
Om te kunnen voldoen aan de vraag naar steeds grotere boekenmagazijnen is het complex meerdere keren verbouwd en uitgebreid, waardoor het inmiddels bestaat uit delen van de 18e – 20e eeuw die allen hun eigen architecturale stempel op het gebouwencomplex hebben gedrukt. De opbouw van het gebouwencomplex met de grote stilistische verschillen is vooral leesbaar aan de straatgevels rondom het plein, de Sint-Pieter-en- Paulusstraat en de Korte Nieuwstraat. Hier vinden we naast elkaar gevels uit verschillende periodes en bouwstijlen, en verschillende manieren om met erfgoed, een historische context en veranderende behoeftes en stijlvoorkeuren om te gaan, van het behoud en de nauwkeurige restauratie van bestaande bouwdelen, via ‘Façadisme’ waarbij alleen een rijtje historische gevels als tweedimensionale objecten zijn bewaard en erachter nieuwbouw is uitgevoerd tot nieuwbouw met een duidelijk te onderscheiden gevelbeeld.
De stad Antwerpen is voornemens om in de nabije toekomst een groot archiefgebouw te realiseren waarin er onder meer ruimte is voor een deel van de boekencollectie van de Erfgoedbibliotheek. Dat betekent dat er in het huidige
gebouwencomplex (veel) ruimte beschikbaar komt en het karakter, de ruimtelijke opzet en de interne logistiek van de
huidige bibliotheek kan worden heroverwogen. Met name de ruimtelijke kwaliteit van sommige leesplekken laat te wensen over. Er is behoefte aan attractieve plekken om te studeren voor scholieren, studenten, burgers en wetenschappers, en er is nood aan ruimte voor culturele evenementen en ontmoetingsruimtes. Er is sprake van het samengaan van het huidige Letterenhuis en de Erfgoedbibliotheek, maar in welke vorm en omvang dit gaat gebeuren staat nog niet vast. Kortom: de gebouwen van de erfgoedbibliotheek zijn toe aan een grondige architecturale verkenning naar de mogelijkheden om het gebouwencomplex te transformeren naar een eigentijdse, kwalitatieve bibliotheek van internationale allure en uitstralingmet behoud van waardevol erfgoed.
Vanwege de historische waarde van de gebouwen op het Conscienceplein zal er een belangrijke focus liggen op de omgang met erfgoed. Het in kaart brengen van de site, het aanvoelen van potenties, het onderzoeken van mogelijke interventies, de site verduurzamen , keuzes maken, … . Kortom een allesomvattende opgave voor de studenten waarbij de balans tussen erfgoed en nieuwe architecturale ingrepen een ware uitdaging betekenen.
Architecturaal gaat deze masterproef om een kritische waardering van de huidige situatie, om het voortbouwen op bestaande kwaliteiten, om interne verbouwingen en uitbreidingen (van behoud tot gedeeltelijke vervanging), subtiele en gedurfde nieuwbouwinterventies, het herdenken en ontwerpen van een aantal sprekende interieurs en fundamentele verduurzaming. Programmatisch gaat het onder meer om het vormgeven van brede studiezalen, ruimte voor bijeenkomsten, conferenties en lezingen gecombineerd met gastronomische, toeristische en museale invullingen.
Het werk in de studio wordt gelinkt aan actuele studies en projecten en richt zich aan gemotiveerde studenten met
belangstelling voor transformaties, bijzondere interieurs en gedetailleerde uitwerkingen. Er is ruimte voor het onderzoeken en ontwikkelen van een specifieke architecturale relatie tussen bestaand en nieuw, om (circulair) materiaalgebruik, en de integratie van duurzame technieken en ontwerpprincipes.

Bezoek van meerdere bibliotheken en erfgoed-gerelateerde projecten in België (Brussel, Gent, Mechelen), Nederland (Tilburg, Groningen, Amsterdam) en Duitsland/ Oostenrijk (München, Berlijn en/of Wenen).

Heritage versus Inheritance: time layers and architectural literacy
A // Cultural literacy
‘In times when we are drowning in information, we yearn for knowledge’ writes Richard Ovenden in Burning the book and also how ‘Libraries and archives have become crucial to supporting democracy, the rule of law and open societies because they are institutions that “hold on to the truth”’.
B // Vision
By 2035, the city of Antwerp wants to provide answers to societal trends such as declining literacy and fast-growing digitalisation.
To make this possible, there is a need for a sustainable and future-proof investment plan and an agile and efficient organisational structure for institutions that are already fully committed to this: the public libraries, the Heritage Library and the Letterenhuis. The network of libraries focuses mainly on reading pleasure, reading promotion, digital skills and cultural encounters. The archive and heritage institutions focus more on cultural literacy.
The Hendrik Conscience Library and the Letterenhuis collect, preserve and disclose literary and library heritage. Both from their unique collections and from and in cooperation with their target groups, they assume a connecting and inspiring role in the heritage and arts field, both on an urban and a Flemish level.
In this sense, a more integrated collaboration on a shared site could enrich both the end user and the collection and the heritage and arts field in Antwerp and Flanders. After all, by promoting and questioning historical knowledge and understanding, both institutions provide insight into the creative process and (book) history, and help preserve, promote and actualise memory and literary, and book culture. Matters of social and democratic importance that inspire and provide connection in a constantly changing world.
EHC is Flanders’ most important preservation library with a leading collection in the field of humanities in general and cultural heritage in Flanders in particular. The Letterenhuis has the largest, broadest, most coherent, unique and therefore most important collection of literary (cultural) (archival) heritage in Flanders from ca. 1800 to the present.
C // Assignment
The Hendrik Conscience Square in Antwerp is a hidden gem in the inner city of Antwerp, shaped and surrounded by buildings with a rich history. Two sides of the square are occupied by a large building complex that today houses the Heritage Library. The library has a rich collection of books of different genres that can be consulted on site but not borrowed. Several reading rooms with study areas therefore form the core of the complex. The largest, most beautiful and famous reading room is the historic Nottebohm Room. There are also several smaller reading rooms built in the 20th century, some offices and workspaces for staff and, above all, book storage rooms for a continuously growing collection.
To meet the demand for ever larger book storage rooms, the complex has been rebuilt and extended several times, so that it now consists of parts from the 18th – 20th centuries, all of which have left their own architectural mark on the building complex. The structure of the building complex with its major stylistic differences is particularly legible on the street facades around the square, Sint-Pieter-en-Paulusstraat and Korte Nieuwstraat.
Here we find side by side facades from different periods and architectural styles, and different ways of dealing with heritage, a historical context and changing needs and style preferences, from the preservation and meticulous restoration of existing building parts, through ‘Façadism’ in which only a row of historical facades have been preserved as two-dimensional objects and new construction has been carried out behind them, to new construction with a clearly distinguishable facade image.
The city of Antwerp plans to construct a large archive building in the near future in which there will be space for part of the Heritage Library’s book collection, among other things. This means that (a lot of) space will become available in the current building complex and the character, spatial layout and internal logistics of the current library could be reconsidered. In particular, the spatial quality of some reading places is not satisfactory. There is a need for attractive places to study for scholars, students, citizens and scientists, and a need for space for cultural events and meeting spaces. There is a plan to merge the current Letterenhuis and the Heritage Library, but the form and size of this
is not yet clear. In short: the Heritage Library buildings are in need of a thorough architectural exploration into the possibilities of transforming the building complex into a contemporary, high-quality library of international allure and appearance-while preserving valuable heritage.
Because of the historical value of the buildings on Conscienceplein, there will be an important focus on dealing with heritage. Mapping the site, sensing potential, investigating possible interventions, making the site sustainable , making choices, … . In short, an all-embracing task for the students in which the balance between heritage and new architectural interventions represent a real challenge.
Architecturally, this master’s thesis involves a critical appreciation of the current situation, building on existing qualities, internal conversions and extensions (from conservation to partial replacement), subtle and daring new-build interventions, the rethinking and design of a number of striking interiors and fundamental preservation. Programmatically, this includes designing study rooms for multiple uses, space for meetings, conferences and lectures combined with gastronomic, touristic and museological interiors.
The work in the studio is linked to current research and projects and is aimed at motivated students with an interest in transformations, unusual interiors and detailed elaborations. There is room to explore and develop a specific architectural relationship between existing and new, a responsible use of materials, and to integrate sustainable techniques and design principles.
D // Excursions
Visit of several libraries and heritage-related projects in Belgium (Brussels, Ghent, Mechelen), the Netherlands (Tilburg, Groningen, Amsterdam) and Germany/Austria (Munich, Berlin and/or Vienna).
