Tianxiang Xu – Beyond the Fold

Beyond the Fold
This project investigates Charleroi’s post-industrial landscape by using folding as a method to reconnect fragmented spaces and histories. Through photography, I captured isolated moments of the city, revealing its layered complexity and unfinished state. Folding serves as a tool to reorganize these fragments, transforming them into dynamic relationships and shifting the perspective from static observation to embodied interaction.

Work 1: Registration Fold records the folding process through animation, connecting independent photographic moments into a cohesive and time-based narrative, where heterogeneity and continuity coexist.

Work 2: Chrono-Spatial Fold abstracts the folding process into geometric lines and grid structures, transitioning from the material to the conceptual. It expresses the relationships between time and space, creating new temporal and spatial dimensions.

Work 3: Embodied Fold translates folding into an interactive model, driven by gears and bolts—symbols of industrial heritage. The audience’s movements directly influence the material form, emphasizing the dynamic dialogue between body, matter, and space.
