Isabelle De Pauw ‘The Dynamic Space of Machinery’

Different sounds, textures, colours & movements make the harbour an inspiring place. A multitude of these elements are present in contrasting forms. What caught my eye the most, was the movement of the machinery. The many brightly colored moving machines and cranes gave this place a special dynamic. The topic of my project is therefore the red crane that deals with the loading of raw materials from a boat to  the site.

For this movement, the crane makes half of a rotation. This became the base for my film. I started combining and overlapping different clips of it in one film.  This created a kind of collaging effect so that the film showed the crane moving in different positions at different times.

I have done further research on this combination of movements in drawings and models.  The drawings and models resulted in a deformed crane where a multitude and combination of elements were present.  I tried to convert this combination, based on the drawings and the film, into architectural language.  A new design where elements of the red crane are still visible and distorted, started to take form.
