Dérive and Fallow describe their practice as undefined – indicating a deliberate absence of a clear framework regarding the types of projects and working methods they engage with. The common thread running through both practices is the search for the right question as part of the design and research process. This occurs both on their own initiative and in collaboration with clients. During this lecture, you will be guided through the various ways in which their projects come about, their choice and application of methods, and the diversity in the results and forms of expression. Both practices are based in Brussels, with projects in Belgium, the Netherlands, and across Europe, ranging from design research on a regional scale to installations and furniture design in public interiors.
Carmen Van Maercke studied at UGent, KU Leuven and IUAV Venice, worked for Studio Paola Vigana, Architecture Workoom Brussels and is now partner at Fallow (office for architecture, landscape and urbanism). At Fallow, she is responsible for innovative projects related to landscape and design research. Beside het practice, Carmen also teaches at the university of Ghent and the Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst.
Hedwig van der Linden is trained as an architect at Delft University of Technology and is co-founder of design practice Derive, operating from Brussels and Rotterdam. Derive is a research-driven practice operating between architecture, public space and urban strategies. Hedwig seeks synergy between conceptual thinking and co-creative practice by providing space for dialogue. She is a guest tutor at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and at the Faculty of Architecture in Delft.
