From February 7 to 11, 2022, the annual conference of the International Association on Planning, Law, and Property Rights (PLPR) will take place in Ghent. The Faculty of Architecture of KU Leuven (Hans Leinfelder and Tristan Claus), the Faculty of Law and Criminology of Ghent University (Geert Van Hoorick and Hendrik Schoukens) and the Department of Environment of HOGENT (Mieke Paelinck and Peter Lacoere) have joined forces to welcome about a hundred international experts to exchange knowledge on various aspects of planning, law and property and all possible combinations.
The overarching theme of the conference is ‘With or without limits’. Indeed, the conference provides the appropriate forum to reflect on the sense and nonsense of limits in relation to societal challenges such as climate change, urban sprawl, fragmentation, affordability and inequality. The conference is an ideal opportunity to take note of insights from other European countries and hopefully, if COVID allows, from other continents. Hans Bruyninckx of the European Environment Agency, Patricia Popelier of the University of Antwerp and Frank Vastmans of KU Leuven already agreed to deliver keynote lectures on reducing land take and hardening, legal certainty and affordability.

We want to encourage you to share your insights on planning, law and property with the international PLPR community. During the conference, several parallel sessions will be organised in which participants can give a short presentation (10′) of their work and exchange views with other participants. It is important to submit an abstract of max. 200 words in which the content of the presentation is briefly explained. This abstract will then go through a review process after which it will be announced in mid-November whether the proposal has been accepted for a presentation during the conference.
We are currently working hard to have the submission tool operational as soon as possible. This does not prevent us from encouraging you anyway to start preparing an abstract for a general presentation or for a presentation in one of the two special sessions (see website). After all, the deadline for submitting the abstract is close, October 15, 2021. Feel free to spread this news further in your own network as well.
