So, in social and economic terms, it is becoming cheaper to live within the city than on its fringe. To cater to this demand new processes have evolved to densify the old informal settlements which are nearer to the city. This densification (formal and informal) is creating severe problems of overcrowding while at the same time huge low density elite and middle income gated settlements are being created. The talk will discuss the causes, processes and the socioeconomic and ecological repercussions of these developments.

—

Arif Hasan is a Pakistani architect and planner, activist, teacher and social researcher.
