It will be a pivotal moment that will help students to make the “crossing” from a vision they have developed in group to an individual interpretation of that vision into urban and architectural design.

The project site comprises the business-like North quarter on the Eastern side and a predominantly residential neighbourhood on the Western side of the canal. The design studio examines the impact of the Brussels Capital-Region’s proposa lto build a new pedestrian overpass across the canal connecting the rue Picard and the Quai de la Voirie. In a later stage, this intervention will involve the introduction of a new tram route that will connect the Gare du Nord railway station with the Tour & Taxis site (and beyond that, all the way to Bockstael). The objectives of this studio are to develop an urban scenario and a matching urban and architectural design proposal that (a) anticipates the social, cultural, economic and environmental impact of the proposed intervention, and (b) attunes potential frictions in a way that multiplies the crossings across real and perceived divides and encourages inclusiveness, multiplicity and resilience of the entire area.

The workshop creates an opportunity for students to critically examine the issues they identified in the first half of the studio. They will translate these issues into installations or experiments that can be set up, experienced and evaluated by the inhabitants and users of the urban space in the project area. Students will use the feedback and experience of this exercise to fine-tune their findings in such a way that their individual urban and architectural designs are firmly “rooted” in the urban context which they propose to change for the better.

This joint workshop is named after the central theme of this semester’s design studio of the first year International Master of Architecture.
