Description of the project:

The (historic) coherent relations between Land, Living, Labour (LLL)  – such as  the cluster of a pastoral landscape+the fam+ the house forming the LLL complex of the farmer-  have been fragmented and scattered. However, the current accelerated transformation of rural areas gives us the opportunity to rethink these LLL dialogues. Do we assemble LLL in one structure or do we reedit what already exist to create new relations? The focus is on the transitions and dialogues between landscape labour and living. How does a building relate to the surrounding landscape? How does it affect the landscape? How to combine working and living? How can we position new economies in the landscape? It raises the question: what a family is, which new forms of economy are being developed and what the difference is between building and landscape?

Site and program We work in Antoing near Doornik. This rural territory potentially has all the LLL elements in a very condensed way. The artificial landscape of former quarries is formed by economy, the abandoned parts of the quarries are now used for recreation and ecology and may become an interesting residential area as an answer to the booming real estate market. Furthermore, the ambition of Antoing is to introduce new economic poles. The student decides what the best dialogue is, between LLL: one large building, a reediting of existing abandoned structures or a fragmented configuration of LLL. Students will decide on types and typologies of economy, housing, and landscape

Method In the first semester a reflection note is made based on a chosen text (see bibliography or a text of the student’s interest) and project of reference. The topic is at the personal interest of the individual student (new housing forms, new economies, landscape forms…). The note is a reasoned basis for the reflection note and the project in semester 2. To advance the final project students correct and reinterpret the regional maps of Antoing made in 1.4. Students identify a strategic site in relation to the LLL dialogue they envisage. A detailed mapping of the chosen site is made to position the building(s) and to rethink the landscape and relations between them.
