Lecture by Wim Walschap (Herzog & de Meuron) 9/10/24

 

“Insights into the design and realization of the M+ Museum in Hong Kong”

On Wednesday 9 October 2024,  2 p.m. we welcome Wim Walschap (Senior Partner at Herzog & de Meuron) for a lecture in Campus Leiekaai 18 in Ghent.

Wim Walschap (°1969) is a Senior Partner at Herzog & de Meuron. He has led various teams on projects ranging from pavilions to high-rises, including The Tate Modern Project in London and Helsinki Dreispitz in Basel. Wim is responsible for M+, a museum for visual culture in Hong Kong; the One Park Drive residential tower in London; Hauptpost Basel; and a number of other projects of diverse scales and typologies in Europe, Asia and the Americas. From concept to completion, he works with a hands-on approach and awareness of the fundamentals of construction. In addition to his dedicated work on numerous architectural projects, Wim has been a member of the Executive Board since 2019 and the Strategic Board since 2023.

Wim graduated from Hoger Architectuurinstituut Sint-Lucas, Brussels, Belgium in 1993. Amongst other practices his past experience includes working with Robbrecht en Daem Architects in Gent for over 8 years. He joined Herzog & de Meuron in 2007 with extensive experience as an architect from both independent work and collaborations on residential, commercial, and institutional projects across all phases. He was promoted to Associate in 2010, to Partner in 2014, and to Senior Partner in 2024.

Herzog & de Meuron is an international architectural practice based in Basel, Switzerland. Established in 1978, the practice is led by the two founders together with the Partners and the CEO. Today, an international team of over 500 collaborators is engaged in a wide range of projects across Europe, the Americas and Asia. The main office in Basel works in tandem with studios in Berlin and Munich, Paris, London, Hong Kong, New York and San Francisco.

The practice has established itself internationally with projects such as the Tate Modern in London, the De Young Museum in San Francisco, M+ Museum for Visual Culture and the Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage & Art in Hong Kong, Pérez Art Museum Miami, Prada Aoyama in Tokyo, SONGEUN Art Space in Seoul, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the National Stadium in Beijing. Many projects are highly recognized public facilities, including museums, stadiums, and hospitals. Alongside these esteemed public facilities, the firm have completed many distinguished private projects including offices, laboratories, and apartment buildings. In the development and realization of all projects, Herzog & de Meuron seeks to foster the public life each project could generate.

Some notable awards received include the Pritzker Architecture Prize (USA) in 2001, the Praemium Imperiale (Japan) in 2007, and the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (USA) in 2014.
