EN: In 1986 the Belgian architect/artist Luc Deleu (TOP Office) laid two pylons horizontally on a square in Ghent. The installation was part of Deleu’s research into Scale & Perspective. The fact that the work was in Ghent was much less important.
Last year the #verbekefoundation in Kemzeke asked me to do something with two similar pylons. I hadn’t forgotten Luc Deleu’s installation and asked for some time to think about it. The work was to be placed between the abbey church of …the Dutch artist Marinus Boezem and a large pile of firewood. Objects change because of the context in which they are pushed. They are given a different lecture. In my doctorate, which I am currently completing at the University of Leuven, I write about it. Context & Narrativity are key concepts within the whole context of my own oeuvre.
In Kemzeke’s context model I presented the two scale models of the pylons on top of each other like a Latin cross. Placed between the chapel and the pile of wood, the name of the Florentine penitentine preacher Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) immediately illuminated. Savonarola’s sermons, which were full of death, destruction and the expected apocalypse or end times, led to great admiration among young Michelangelo and Pico Della Mirandola, followed by inner conflict. On the one hand they had to renounce art, but on the other hand they had to show Savonarola’s visions of death and destruction through art. In this way Savonarola paradoxically finds his way as an important influencer of the most progressive art of his time. Savonarola eventually ended up on the stake. The project for the Verbeke Foundation is conceived as a Monument to Girolama Savonarola. (in collaboration with Christophe Vandeneynde)
