(19-20) Exploring Linnahall

Studio Structural Contingencies in Tallinn, Estonia.

Masterproef
Academic year 2019-20, Ghent
Promotoren: Caroline Voet, Eireen Schreurs

Linnahall, built between 1976 and 1980 by architect Raine Karp, is the case study through which we will explore the idea of the endless city, an urbanity of interiors and rooms. What can this abandoned former sports complex, situated at the sea side, offer to the Estonian capital of Tallinn?

We will accept its presence in the city and place its ideological baggage in the light of its materiality and topology. How can we crack its genetic code and render this morphology into something human? How can we understand its past as a new layer for future developments?

Questions of reuse and reconversion.

A ruin and a landscape of concrete and grey limestone.

The studio outcome will be a strategy and a concrete proposal that re-interprets Linnahall’s qualities, so that the hall can resume its role as a public space in the city. The studio will start with a visit to Tallinn, where we will do a workshop with the Faculty of Architecture, Estonian Academy of Arts.

As part of the Structural Contingencies program, this studio is linked to the research on Pioneering Practices and Material Culture, analysing work of for example Dom Hans van der Laan and Juliaan Lampens. As a preparation for the design this studio will focus on a group of Pioneering Practices that operated around Tallinn in the 1970’s as Toomas Rein, Leonhard Lapin and Valve Pormeister.
