A BRAVE NEW WORLD DISRUPTED
A workshop for students of the 1st Master International Master of Architecture.
Programme Lead: Caroline Sohie
KU Leuven, Faculty of Architecture, Campus Sint-Lucas Ghent, Hoogstraat 51, Ghent
Monday 6 November – Friday 10 November 2017
Echoing dystopian worlds, contemporary societies worldwide are challenged byunprecedented pressure to redefine their built, ecological, economic and social environment, torn between the demands of a rapidly urbanising environment, scarcity of resource, climate change and the consequences of rising inequity.
Against a background of growing disruption, how will designers transcend these challenges and imagine new futures with the insight of the present?
The studio will provoke critical debate and reflection on the broader societal role of architecture within this context of uncertainty; the contribution of the architect will be questioned in revisiting ‘brave new world’ futures and enable the participant to gain insight, through design and critique, in their own engagement with a changing reality.
Prominent features of the workshop
• A diverse series of provocations; challenge the role of design in a world of uncertainty and significant change
• Introduction to trend analysis; explore emerging trends through data analysis and interrogate their impact on the practice of design
• Identification of design drivers; develop a critical framework to enable change by design
• Scenario planning; critical engagement with imagined futures
• Explore tactics of design; enquiry around trans-disciplinary approaches to reconceptualise the built environment
