Van Hove Prijs 2019 for Sophie Leemans, Kuang-Liang Lo and Dorine Van Der Bank.

On October 19, 2019, the 9-person jury of the Van Hove prize met at the headquarters of the UPA-BUA (professional union of architects). The proclamation took place on November 20.

The jury decided to respect the diversity of five selected projects without giving priority to a particular aspect with a unique prize and unanimously decided to award the five laureates five honorable mentions of € 1000 each, without special ranking. The honorable mentions went to:

  • Sophie Leemans (Faculty of Architecture) ‘Architecture and flood permitting cities – urban flooding as incentive for positive incremental change’
  • Kuang-Liang Lo (Faculty of Architecture) ‘A heart we share – The garden of Beirut’
  • Dorine Van Der Bank (Faculty of Architecture) ‘Beyond the brick wall: interpreting Pieter De Hoogh within the historical context of the almshouses’
  • Sara De Sterck & Ruben Vanvlasselaer (Faculty of Engineering Sciences – architecture) ‘Ferme Alaise – Design research into the perpetuation of agricultural rooms by integrating a productive residential landscape’
  • Ludovic Gaffarel (UCL LOCI Louvain La Neuve) ‘The post Brexit customs – Hoek van Holland/Rotterdam’

Linde Debbaut, Dalia Puodziute, Anna Leban, Silvio Palombo (Faculty of Architecture) and Thomas Huber (Faculty of Engineering Sciences) were nominated!

Every year the UPA-BUA organises an architecture competition for graduation projects. In 1982, the UPA-BUA organised the VAN HOVE PRIJS for the first time, named after its founder-chairman. The prize is awarded to a graduation design and is open to all students who obtain the diploma of architect or engineer at a Belgian university faculty during the academic year of the prize.

A jury, consisting of Belgian and foreign architects who are fully in practice, assesses the submitted designs based on the following criteria:

  •     the quality of the design, its coherence and development in relation to the research question and the assignment
  •     the graphic quality, readability and communication skills
  •     the interpretation of contemporary needs, the social added value and the anticipation of future needs
  •     the spatial qualities
  •     the experience value and the command of the formal language
  •     the sense of reality and the feasibility.
